When Graham Brown and Megan Blyth met Invernessgigs

When I caught up with singer songwriters Graham Brown and Megan Blyth, I was taking the opportunity to speak to these two rising stars of the Inverness music scene, in advance of Graham’s EP release at the Ironworks on the 9th December. Meeting up with this pair was no mean feat, as finding a time in their busy schedules was not that simple. Eventually an evening was found when Graham could hot foot it from the railway station, on his return from some recording in the central belt, and at a time that fitted in with Megan’s hectic program. A … Read more

Little Sisters play Hootananny

Little Sisters to officially debut  on the 23rd of December at Madhatters. Around this time last year we were recommending that folk see Samantha Begg play the Market Bar. This year with a change of format the sentiment is the same, whilst the venue has changed and the line up has been extended. Little Sisters has evolved from the relationship between Samantha and Barry Mackay that saw them play a few gigs very early in the year (our apologies if we have missed something). Initially added to the mix was singer songwriter Megan Blyth (an interview from whom is forthcoming) … Read more

invernessGiGs talks to Spoke too Soon

Spoke too Soon came to our attention following the announcement that they would be playing the forthcoming Hit the Road tour (details here). We managed to speak to the lead singer, Joe Stainke (with a little edit from the other guys!)…. This is your first interview, can you tell us about the four of you and how the band came together, are we right in thinking it’s got it something to do with “Alness has got Talent”?   Joe: Hunter and I met in the Highland Youth Big Band and, discovering that we both liked the same music, we decided … Read more

Josephine Sillars plays Glachbeg

A review of Josephine Sillars at Glachbeg Folk/Acoustic session, 15/11/2011. The Glachbeg sessions have been running for over a year now, during which time they have been gently evolving within their initial remit of folk and acoustic music. The setting and atmosphere created is both warm and welcoming, with much credit going to the Bull family for their dedication to the evening. Tonight’s event saw Josephine Sillars join Redhook Rapids and Woodland Roots in a very eclectic mix of styles, which added to the freshness of the evening. The venue, was almost pushed to capacity Josephine had come fresh from … Read more

Airship rises high

Review of Airship, with support from Thousand Stars and Midnight Glory at Mad Hatters, Inverness on Wednesday 2 November, 2011. Two local bands were given the opportunity to witness the appearance of Airship at Mad Hatters on Wednesday. First to take the floor were local rockers, Thousand Stars. An enthusiastic bunch whose power guitars are driven along by Lauren Black’s vocal. They took us on a journey through their repertoire which included, Guiding Lights, Rollercoaster Universe, Phoenix (title track from their forthcoming EP), and the eponymous Thousand Stars before Lauren left the stage to let the lads finish of their … Read more

“Like a bulldozer ploughing through an orphanage”

Review of Zombie Militia, with support from Threshold Sicks @ Mad Hatters, October 14th 2011. SIDENOTE: As stated in the preview article, this gig was to be headlined by Glasgow “blood metallers”, Achren. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, Achren had had to pull out of the show. Despite the unfortunate news, the other bands involved were determined that the show must go on!   With a start of 10:30pm, as seems to be the norm with Mad Hatters, we eventually kick off the night’s festivities with Threshold Sicks. Hailing from Perth, the metal quartet rips straight into a rather aurally … Read more

invernessGiGs talks to Roadway

In an age when music genres are so diverse that there as many kinds of styles as bands that play them, its nice to see the classic rock bands still appeal to a wide section of the new, young and upcoming As a fan of bands like Iron Maiden, Def Leppard and Whitesnake from the first time round, its refreshing to see a new young Scottish band emerging who still cite such classic rock bands and others like them as their main influences. Roadway, formed by Inverness guitarist Ross McEwan in 2009, continue to push their way forward gathering new … Read more

The Little Mill of Happiness Cook up a Storm

Review of The Little Mill of Happiness at  Ig:lu, Inverness on the  16th of  September 2011. Over the last year I have seen The Little Mill of Happiness play in both a festival setting, Belladrum, and on the stage and on the floor at the Ironworks. Tonight for their EP launch they were using the more intimate surroundings of Ig:lu on Church Street.   For those that aren’t familiar with Ig:lu, it is a petite arts venue up on third floor above MacEwens of Perth. When I say third floor this is a bit of an estimate as the flights of … Read more
