Rockness 2011- A Paid Perspective

You pays your money, you takes your chance, or so they say. So I paid up, bought my ticket, a weekend no camping ticket that is, so unfortunately I cannot comment on the camp site this year, but suffice to say, you can’t beat your own bed at night, but I did spare a thought for the tortured and hungover souls on Monday morning as the rain was teeming down, and I was tucked up in a solid structure. So where do I start, probably best with Friday when I possibly picked the worst of the queuing traffic to arrive … Read more

Sound City Stage @ Rockness

The Sound City Stage was a bastion of new and a few local bands, well at least before the festival it was. The stage played host to the competition to win numerous promotion based prizes (see the article here). It was therefore ironic that the stage suffered from a lack of promotion. Indeed it was only on Saturday that the sign appeared and that was firmly attached on the inside of the tent. The stage never appeared on the App or lanyard (We can understand the lanyard issues about line up but not location, and don’t get us started on … Read more

Paolo Nutini at Rockness 2011

It still irks us to say that Paolo Nutini headlined Rockness, but it did happen there will be those that say we should just live with it. We felt a morbid fascination to see what would happen when the Paisley boy hit the big stage. It was clear that there was a lot of positive anticipation for him, closet Nutini fans were gathering, although it needs to be said that it was said in very hushed tones indeed (seriously we asked a couple of girls who they were looking forward to seeing they said “The Chems, Magnetic Man and Paolo … Read more

First thoughts on Rockness

As with every Friday of a festival the feel good factor is riding high, probably higher than that, enough to deal with the occasional downpour and a few traffic queues. The site has filled out, since our photos earlier in the week but the reality is that whilst the stage has moved forward towards the hill similar to the earlier days of Rockness. It creates a cosier feel. We are not  convinced that the festival footprint is bigger (and don’t know), but intimate without being uncomfortable. There seems to be a few more nooks and cranny’s which by all account give … Read more

Kasabian at Rockness 2011

Kasabian last played the Highlands in 2007 at the Skye Music Festival (and the Ironworks), it was a coup then, as in many respects it was for Rockness this year.Kasabian’s pedigree had never been in doubt (although the fit into Rockness and potential “nedfest” it may have caused, did create some conversation). From stepping on the stage , you could clearly see that Rockness was in very good and safe hands indeed, these are a band that are on the top of their game and we suspect the only thing stopping them from finishing the stage on the Sunday night … Read more

Jim King speaks to invernessGiGs

You cannot escape that Rockness is in town and the anticipation is building. The reality that Kasabian, Chemical Brothers et al will be making their way to Dores in the very near future is starting to sink in. But with the anticipation we had a few questions that we wanted to ask the Director of the Festival, Jim King and to our great pleasure, he managed to take some time to speak to us… How important was winning the NME Best Small Festival award? JK – It was a really tremendous award to win and when you consider that it … Read more

Interview with Polymath

ROCKNESS IS NEARLY UPON US. Be still thy collective beating heart and be prepared for what we thought might never happen: Local DJs at Rockness. Polymath has been making and mixing music for a while now and seems to be on the verge of a serious breakthrough. Darling of Kissy Sell Out and described by Glasgow’s Synth blog as a ‘techno titan’ can Polymath keep up this hyperbolic … Read more
